I have been studying Myomassology since May 2007. During my training, I performed more than 50 hours of voluntary practice on family members and friends. I also worked in the student clinic at Irene's for 50 hours on walk-in appointments from the community. Each week, I would learn, practice and then perform new techniques on my classmates, as well as receive those treatments from the students. I also attended several weekend workshops to accomplish my requirements for elective credits. These electives included Reflexology, Sports Massage, Carpal Tunnel Techniques, Aromatherapy, Shiatsu and many others.

SHOULD I TIP MY MASSAGE THERAPIST? HOW MUCH IS STANDARD?

In general, it depends on what efforts the therapist puts into your massage. Obviously, if you are not happy with the massage, you should consult with your therapist, and you would most likely not be expected to give a monetary tip. However, if the therapist comes to your home, or works in a clinic owned by someone other than themselves, then a tip is somewhat expected of at least 15%. This has become custom due to either their effort in coming to you, or because they only earn a small percentage of what you are charged in a clinic.

POLICIES:

Privacy and Draping

Prior to your massage you will be asked to complete a health history form. Sarah will privately review this with you to answer any questions. Then you will be left in your treatment room to remove all jewelry and clothing to your level of comfort. Do not remove your underpants. After you undress, lay on the table under the sheet to wait for your massage. Sarah will ensure you remain properly draped during the session. As each part of your body is massaged, it will be uncovered only until your therapist is finished. Genitals and women's breasts are never massaged and will remain covered at all times. Other sensitive, nerve filled areas, including the inner thigh, arm pits, and gluteal crease will not be worked on and will remain covered as needed. Additionally, the client or therapist may chose to allow someone in the room to observe the massage. This should be something discussed between the therapist and client prior to the massage experience. The need for a second person for observation may be for educational, comfort, or safety purposes, and will frequently occur during first time client massages. When the client is a child, a parent must always be present for each massage.

What to Expect

You can expect a relaxing experience. Make sure you are honest with Sarah, inform her of any sore spots or pain. It is her goal to assure your comfort. She may use different lighting, oils, or aromatherapy techniques to assist the massage. Please make her aware of all allergies or irritations from oils you have incurred in the past.

Completing a Massage

Sarah will inform you when your session is over and leave the room. Get up from the table slowly and take your time getting dressed. Massage is very relaxing, and you may need a moment to focus. You should feel wonderfully relaxed, and many of your aches and pains will have dissolved.

Following a Massage

As toxins are being released from your body, you may experience mild flu-like symptoms the next day. Do not be alarmed, this is natural. It is recommended that you drink eight full glasses of water per day for the next two days to prevent this.
